Source: U.S. Census Bureau, ACS 2020-2024, tables C16001, B01003 and B19013. Speaking Spanish at home isn't the same as being Hispanic. New York ranks number 1 by speakers among the 118 cities of 100,000 or more that clear 20%.

What the New York market is like

New York is the city with the most Spanish speakers in the country. It is not one community: there are Dominicans in Washington Heights, Puerto Ricans with decades of roots in East Harlem and the Bronx, Mexicans in Sunset Park and Corona, and many more. A campaign for "New York Hispanics" almost always overspends.

Washington Heights, the South Bronx, East Harlem, Sunset Park, Jackson Heights and Corona are the clearest places to start. Choose by neighborhood, not by borough.

Treat Spanish as a segment, and measure it

In New York, Spanish speakers are an important group but not the whole market. Start with the services and neighborhoods where people already call you in Spanish, track the inquiries and expand when you see a response.

Serve people in Spanish from start to finish

46.6% of Spanish speakers here say they speak English less than "very well". If the phone call, the quote or the contract only comes in English, that's where you can lose the sale.

Three ideas for New York businesses

Bodegas, restaurants and shops

Focus on the blocks around you. A spotless Google profile and recent reviews are worth more than expensive citywide ads.

Paperwork and legal services

Be careful with the word "notario": in the U.S. a notary public is not an attorney, and New York regulates how it is advertised. State clearly which credentials you hold and what you can do.

Home services

Choose one borough or a few neighborhoods. Traffic makes a distant job cost more than it seems, and your ad should reflect where you really go.

If you'd like the step-by-step, read our Spanish marketing guide. It helps you decide what to publish first and how to measure it.
